With record breaking temperatures in July, many of us have enjoyed the glorious sunshine so far this summer but we mustn't forget that skin has a lot to deal with when exposed to sunlight. Studies have shown that sun exposure results in up to 80% of our skin damage and premature ageing. Unfortunately, sun damage isn't reversible however, you can help improve the appearance of sun damaged skin & protect it from further damage by following our simple tips.
Protect with a high SPF factor
Because exposure to the sun causes most of the skin changes associated with aging, protecting the skin from the sun is the single most important skin care practice you can adopt. Significant exposure to the sun will wrinkle and dry the skin. Uneven pigmentation -- from freckles to small or large brown spots -- is another side effect of frequent sunning. Melasma, commonly associated with pregnancy, is brought out by the sun and produces large brown patches on the forehead and cheeks.. Wear a sun protection factor that contains a high UVB and UVA factor of 30+.
Take additional sun protection measures
People who do not have much melanin and sun burn easily should protect themselves by covering up. Wear a hat and UV protected sunglasses and seek shade where possible, limiting their total exposure time, and limiting their sun exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Keep hydrated. – Both on the inside and out
Over exposure to the sun brings on dehydration. Hydration means you lose more fluid than you take in. When our bodies are dehydrated it looks t our skin to draw remaining moisture, this can make our skin feel dry and tight, keep up your fluids by keeping up your water intake. When your skin is exposed to UV rays, without protection, the rays can damage and even kill skin cells. This can cause dryness and skin pigmentation. As the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the skin) is damaged by UV exposure it thickens and becomes dehydrated, leading to rough, flaky skin. You can help relieve the appearance of flakiness by exfoliating. Once your skin has fully recovered exfoliate once a week with a mild scrub or cleanser to help promote cell renewal, finish off which a serum or moisturising containing hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a moisture binding ingredient that promotes hydration and supple skin.
Take care of your lips
We often neglect our lips in the summer leading them to become sore and burnt. Look out for lip products that contain a protective SPF. Did you know that eye serums are also great for lip care? So why not try our own Norwich Cosmetic Clinic Luminous Eye Repair!
